GARY, Ind. — The Gary SouthShore RailCats (20-16) broke a tie in the eighth to win 2-1 and complete a weekend sweep over the Saltdogs (18-18) in front of 3,050 fans at U.S. Steel Yard Sunday afternoon.
EJ Devarie’s single scored the go-ahead run, plating Tillman Pugh for the game’s sole earned run.
Brad Orosey (1-1) inherited the bases loaded with one out in the seventh and got out of the jam but allowed the run in the eighth to suffer the loss.
Matt Larkins pitched 6 1/3 innings, allowing just an unearned run on seven hits, striking out a season-high eight and walking six.
Karl Triana pitched seven innings, allowing an unearned run for Gary, striking out six and walking three.
Gary scored its first run in the second, capitalizing on two Saltdogs errors.
The ‘Dogs tied the game with an unearned run that was sprouted by a Pat Kelly lead-off single in the sixth.
Orosey has stranded all 12 runners he has inherited on the campaign.
The Saltdogs are off Monday and return to Haymarket Park Tuesday night to host the Kansas City T-Bones at 6:35 p.m. RHP Ryan O’Sullivan is expected to face RHP Jared Messer. Radio coverage begins at 6:05 p.m. on KFOR FM 103.3/1240 AM.
