LINCOLN — A pitcher’s duel turned into a laugher late as the Laredo Lemurs (13-10) beat up the Saltdogs (13-10) 9-1 in front of 5,840 fans at Haymarket Park Sunday evening.
Denis Phipps cranked a solo homer to lead off the eighth, giving Laredo a 2-1 lead.
The Lemurs tallied three more in the eighth and another four in the ninth to snap a three-game losing streak.
Lindsey Caughel pitched seven innings, allowing one run on nine hits while striking out six and walking zero for the ‘Dogs.
Caughel dug deep after taking a smashed ground ball off the left shin in the second inning.
Matt Sergey pitched six innings of one-run ball, striking out seven for Laredo.
Stephen Shackleford (0-1) allowed four runs in 1/3 of an inning to suffer the loss.
Rene Leveret went 2-for-3 at the plate. Pat Kelly drove in the ‘Dogs lone run with an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth.
