LAREDO, Texas — Lindsey Caughel was magnificent and Connor Teykl impressive in his professional debut as the Saltdogs (31-23) shutout the Laredo Lemurs (32-24) 2-0 in front of 830 fans at Uni-Trade Stadium Saturday night.
The Saltdogs have won 13 of their last 16, and have thrown seven shutouts on the season.
Caughel (5-3) [rhymes with ‘boggle’] pitched seven innings, allowing just four hits and two walks with eight strikeouts to earn the win.
The Orlando native now leads the American Association with 77 strikeouts and active pitchers with a 2.10 ERA.
Lincoln plated both of the game’s runs in the first inning.
Robby Kuzdale led off the game with a single. After a passed ball, the former Rice Owl Teykl stroked an RBI double into the left-field corner.
Two batters later, Brandon Jacobs hit a single to right, scoring Teykl.
Brad Orosey pitched a scoreless eighth and Evan Reed a perfect ninth with two strikeouts for his 13th save.
Teykl went 2-for-3 with a double, RBI, run and two walks – the latter coming after 11 pitches – in his pro debut.
The benches cleared at the end of the eighth inning after Tyler Urps took exception to an apparent hard slide into second by Alvaro Rondon.
Lincoln has allowed just one run in the weekend’s first 18 innings.
The ‘Dogs stranded a season-high 14 runners.
The series finale is Sunday night at 7:05 p.m. RHP Shairon Martis is expected to face RHP Troy Marks.
