GARY, Ind. — The Saltdogs (16-20) were nearly no-hit in the resumed middle game of the weekend set against the RailCats (20-15) but bounced back nicely to book a 4-3 victory in front of 3,911 fans at U.S. Steel Yard Sunday evening.
Joe Bisenius (2-2) pitched 5 2/3 innings, allowing just one earned run on three hits, striking out seven and walking two to earn the win. Marshall Schuler spun a scoreless final frame for his 10th save.
Chad Mozingo began a two-out rally in the top of the third with a triple to right. After Luis Nunez singled him in, Matt Forgatch launched a two-run shot to left to give the 'Dogs the 3-0 lead.
Omar Luna, playing in his first game in a Saltdogs uniform, belted a solo shot in the fourth to extend the lead to 4-1, which proved to be the difference.
Morgan Coombs (3-3) allowed four runs on six hits in six innings to absorb the loss.
In the rain-suspended game, continued from Saturday night, it took the 'Dogs until two outs in the top of the ninth to record their first hit.
Luis Nunez chopped a ball over the pitcher's head and legged out an infield single to break up what was nearly a RailCats' combined no-hitter.
Gary SouthShore scored two runs in the third and two in the fourth to win the game 4-0, and even up the series at a game apiece.
Travis McGee (1-1) pitched four hitless innings of relief, striking out six to earn the win. Michael Click (2-2) allowed four runs – three earned – in two innings to suffer the loss.
Stephen Bougher, McGee, James Parr and Ethan Gibbons combined to throw nine innings, allowing just one hit with two walks and 12 strikeouts for the RailCats.
