LINCOLN — Max Whieldon and four other pitchers combined to allow just four hits as the Sioux City Explorers (10-13) shutout the Saltdogs (11-13) 3-0 in front of 3,633 fans at Haymarket Park Sunday evening.

Whieldon (2-2) went 5 2/3 innings, allowing no runs on three hits while walking two and fanning three to earn the victory. Geno Glynn, Eddie Delacruz, and Andrew Snowdon chipped in with 2 1/3 innings of scoreless middle relief before Chris Bodishbaugh finished it off in the ninth to book his third save.

The Explorers opened the game’s scoring with an unearned run in the second, before tallying another in the third and an insurance run in the seventh on a suicide squeeze play.

Pete Parise (3-2) pitched seven innings, allowing two earned on seven hits while striking out two to suffer the tough-luck loss. Parise retired 12 consecutive batters at one point.

Joe Spiers went 2-for-3 with a walk and two stolen bases. Spiers reached base 10 times over the course of the three-game set.

The ‘Dogs were blanked for the third time this season, and managed a season-low four hits.
