LINCOLN — Matt Petrone hit a home run to begin extra innings as the Gary SouthShore RailCats (15-15) edged the Saltdogs (17-13) 2-1 in 10 in front of 3,528 fans at Haymarket Park Sunday evening.
Petrone took Stephen Shackleford deep to start the 10th, his first home run since joining Gary from the Pacific Association.
Taylor Black (2-2) pitched two scoreless innings of relief to earn the win. Andy Roberts allowed a couple base runners in the bottom of the 10th but notched the save.
The Saltdogs scored their run on a two-out RBI single from Pat Kelly.
Gary quickly evened the score with an unearned run in the top of the third.
Jeff McKenzie, Brad Orosey and Evan Reed combined to throw nine innings without allowing an earned run for the ‘Dogs.
The Saltdogs are off Monday and play host to Winnipeg Tuesday night at 6:35 p.m. RHP Matt Larkins is expected to face RHP Mikey O’Brien.
