The annual ‘Homer’s Heroes’ game with Junior Saltdogs and Saltdogs players took place Saturday morning at the Alex Gordon Training Complex at Haymarket Park.
In addition to the players and Homer, Saltdogs front office staff participated in the early-summer classic, as well as Public Address Announcer Chris Lofgren and Organist “Diamond” Dan Benes.
The game is usually played at Bowlin Stadium but was moved indoors due to wet field conditions.
The Homer’s Heroes division of the Junior Saltdogs League is for boys and girls with physical or intellectual disabilities, ages 5 to 17.
In 2016, more than 100 players participated in the program. Six weeks of games are played starting the first Saturday of June. Volunteer “Buddies” encourage and assist each player during the game.
The Optimist Clubs of Lincoln established the program in 1992 and has coordinated this baseball league since that time. Shirts and awards are furnished by the Optimist Clubs. Caps, field rental and equipment are sponsored by the Junior Saltdogs League.
Select Homer’s Heroes players will serve as ‘Watchdogs’ on the field at Haymarket Park before the Saltdogs game June 19.
