GENEVA, Illinois – 3B Luis Roman reached four times with a double and a homer against his former team, and the ‘Dogs beat the Kane County Cougars 6-5 at Northwestern Medicine Field on Saturday night.
Roman went 2-for-2 with two walks and hit his fifth homer of the year, while LHP David Zoz earned his first save of the year by recording the final five outs of the game.
Lincoln (47-51) took a 1-0 lead on an RBI double from 1B Will Kengor in the 2nd inning, while 2B Josh Allen tied the game with a solo homer in the 4th.
Lincoln scored three times without a hit in the 5th inning. With the bases loaded and nobody out LF Zane Zurbrugg drew a walk to make it 2-1. After 2B Nate Samson grounded into a double play to make it 3-1, RF Connor Panas scored on a wild pitch to make it 4-1.
Roman’s homer – a solo shot – made it 5-1 in the 6th inning before C Hector Sanchez scored two with a two-out single in the bottom of the 6th.
The ‘Dogs added one run in the 7th on an RBI infield single from Kengor, but the Cougars got two back in the 8th on an RBI double from 3B Olivier Basabe and a sacrifice fly from CF Michael Woodworth.
After Zoz recorded the final two outs of the 8th inning, he worked around a two-out double from Allen in a scoreless 9th to pick up the save.
Panas extended his hitting streak to 10 games, while Zurbrugg’s season-long 10-game streak came to an end.
LHP Abdallah Aris allowed three runs over 5 and 2/3 innings, earning a sixth win in his final start of the year.
