LINCOLN — The Saltdogs (23-18) took both ends of a double header against the El Paso Diablos (10-32) in front of 3,490 fans at Haymarket Park Friday night.
Behind a big effort from Daniel Carroll and some lights-out relief, the 'Dogs downed El Paso 7-4 in the first game of the twin bill. Carroll went 3-for-4 with four RBI and a stolen base.
Stayton Thomas (win, 1-0), P.J. Zocchi (hold), and R.J. Rodriguez (save, 15) combined for three perfect innings to close out the game.
In the nightcap, Stephen Bougher (1-0) was fantastic in his first start as a professional. The 22-year old hurler from Papillion, Neb. struck out eight in five-plus innings, allowing just one hit and one run to earn the victory. Bougher had a perfect game through four frames and a no-hitter through five.
Tyler Goodro hit a solo home run and went 2-for-3, Carroll went 2-for-3 with a solo shot in the second game.
R.J. Rodriguez tossed a perfect seventh in the second game to earn his 16th save of the season. The Saltdogs bullpen spun five perfect innings combined in the double header.
The clubs meet again Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. for game two of the three-game series. Pete Parise (3-3, 3.80) is facing Seth Lintz (0-1, 13.50). Radio coverage begins at 6:35 p.m. on KFOR 1240.
