SIOUX FALLS, South Dakota – Justin Byrd doubled in the 9th inning to extend his hitting streak to a season-high 11 games, but the ‘Dogs stranded the tying run in scoring position in a 6-5 loss to the Sioux Falls Canaries at Sioux Falls Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Byrd led off the 9th with a double, but Caleb Frare recorded three consecutive groundouts to finish the game and end Lincoln’s six-game road winning streak – tied for the longest in the American Association this season.
The ‘Dogs (31-30) fell behind on Mike Hart’s solo homer in the 2nd, but scored twice in the 3rd to take the lead. Skyler Weber scored on a wild pitch before Ryan Long hit a sacrifice fly.
With two outs in the 3rd, Trey Michalczewski hit a three-run homer to make it 4-2, while Cade Gotta’s RBI triple and Jabari Henry’s RBI single gave Sioux Falls (24-37) a 6-2 lead in the 4th.
Long hit an RBI double in the and Curt Smith had an RBI single in the 5th, and David Vidal’s solo homer made it 6-5 in the 8th.
Keenan Bartlett allowed six runs over 4.2 innings, while Tyler Anderson struck out the only batter he faced and Jake Hohensee tossed three scoreless innings in relief.
The ‘Dogs continue the six-game road trip with a three-game series against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks. First pitch time from Newman Outdoor Field is scheduled for 7:02 p.m. on Tuesday night, and pregame coverage begins at 6:30 on ESPN Lincoln 101.5 FM/1480 AM.
