LINCOLN — Every starter got a hit and former big leaguer Shairon Martis won his debut as the Saltdogs (6-13) routed the Winnipeg Goldeyes (8-11) 14-5 to avoid the sweep in front of 4,415 fans at Haymarket Park Wednesday night.
Lincoln jumped out to a 6-0 lead through three innings, highlighted by a Curt Smith two-run triple in the first and a Jeremy Hamilton solo homer to leadoff the third.
Winnipeg then scored the next five runs before Mackenzie King stranded the possible tying run on third base in the sixth.
Martis (1-0) pitched five innings, allowing four runs on seven hits to earn the win. All four runs were scored in the fourth and fifth, after their had been two outs and nobody on base.
Rob Nixon (1-2) surrendered seven runs on nine hits in 5 2/3 innings to take the loss.
Mitch Canham, Matt Forgatch and Brian Joynt each had two hits. Lead-off man Eddie Young tripled, walked twice and scored three runs.
The Saltdogs tallied a season-high 14 runs; Conor Spink and Zach Arneson closed out the game with 2 2/3 scoreless innings of relief.
Lincoln begins an eight-game road trip Friday night in Wichita at 7:05 p.m. RHP Luis Chirinos (2-1, 5.63) is scheduled to face LHP Charlie Lowell (0-1, 4.11). Radio coverage begins at 6:35 p.m. on KFOR 1240.
