An Omaha native, Brownell is one of the most decorated players in independent minor league history. He’s pitched 12 seasons of indy ball and posted an 114-84 record with a 3.81 ERA in 300 appearances and 255 starts. He’s thrown 1732.2 innings, given up 1735 hits, 854 runs, 733 earned runs, 540 walks and 1314 strikeouts. He was originally drafted in the 47th round of the 2002 MLB Draft out of Butler County Community College, but opted to stay in school and eventually attended the University of Oklahoma where he was selected in the 27th round of the 2006 MLB Draft by the Philadelphia Phillies.
